Soul crushing: When talking about work, soul crushing is used to describe a demeaning, overwhelming deadly boring, or otherwise psychologically damaging corporate job”.

Workplace Burnout: The World Health Organization added “Workplace Burnout” to the International Classification of Diseases as an “Occupational Phenomenon”, which means that even though it is not a medical condition, it is included as a cause for which people might contact health services. Although feeling burned out because of work is not a new concept, it seems that it is increasing with the incessant connectivity of today. It seems that people are more available to work at any moment and in any place, blurring the lines of war hours and leisure time. Being always available makes people work indecent amount of times and to the point of physical and mental exhaustion. Workplace Burnout is fueled by cultural phenomenons such as: the increasing pressure of toxic productivity and hustle culture.

Toxic Productivity: An unhealthy obsession with being proactive and constantly on the go. It gives us a contact feeling that wha’t we’re doing is not enough”. Young people today are those affected the most by toxic productivity and their admiration for hustle culture. There is a constant need for everyone to be available to work at any moment, fueled by the idea that those who work the most, will eventually succeed.

Hustle Culture: The overachieving belief that the more you do, the more valuable you are. People feel incessant feeling of fear, guilt and shame because they feel that whatever they are doing is not enough. Huslte Culture is also glamorized by celebrities and it has encouraged it amongst many of their followers — specially the younger ones.

Creative Burnout: People working in the creative industry can also experience a more specific type of workplace burnout called “creative burnout”. Creative burnout results from having an extended period of unmanaged stress and manifests itself in the form of an overwhelming and inescapable sensation of feeling trapped, soul-crushed, and drained of one’s creativity.
